preventing existential risks seems to be the only obvious step to preserving the gains of the total sum of human progress made before hand. I would guess that the utiles gained from preventing these disasters are as great as Michael says. What a great article and what a neat way of combining utility economic theory with concrete ways that we can maximise the utility to our actions.
