Dear Future Hi Readers,
Our forums have been hacked by Islamic hackers. If you go there now, you can see their handywork. The question is, why us? Of all the people in the west, we at Future Hi are a very open and accepting bunch. I can't think of anything we have said or done that would bring the wrath of islam over most other western sites. We preach love, tolerance, openess and acceptance. We strive for a better future for EVERYONE.
Does anyone know how to fix the forums? Hopefully we did not loose all the high quality posts and heartfelt commentary over their last year of existence.
Overall, a sad thing (for them more than us)... not sure what else to say.
Posted by paul at March 9, 2006 07:09 PMwell god damn .... if that aint a bitch.

Posted by: Chinedum Ofoegbu (also, razorsmile) at March 9, 2006 09:40 PMUsing the "jump to" function, EVERYTHING is still accessible and intact. The very first category in the 'Introductions' tab is now called 'Hacked' but everything within is still a-ok. They didnt do too much damage. It looks like a script that can be deleted. Im wondering if it was set loose by a registered user posting it in the forum? :O
Posted by: Upwinger at March 9, 2006 09:54 PMUpwinger is right. You've lost nothing. Here's what you need to do: Back up your SQL database (in case you make a mistake later), then wipe the forums out completely and reinstall phpBB. On the install, it should make use of yoru existing database and everything should be normal. If not, then you can import the database from your backup.
Posted by: JohnFen at March 9, 2006 10:53 PMhey Paul,
i tried the same phpbb forum for a while on my site.
it got hacked as well with some bogus signature. i doubt its anything personal. its most likely people, or maybe even scripts taking advantage of some holes in the forum set up. probably not even making specific targets, just going for coding holes.
from what i understand its good to keep up with the phpbb updates.
peas and brocolis:)
Yeah.. This really doesn't have a 'hacker' kind of signature. Alternative interpretation: You've been 'hacked' by 'murican script kiddies trying to generate bad press for the evil terr'ists. Islam.com doesn't seem like a serious, carefully chosen redirect when you check it out.
I concur,
doesn't feel "Islamic" in any way, shape or form

Posted by: Upwinger at March 10, 2006 06:21 AMI'm glad all you IT whiz-kids (and I call you that very lovingly/admiringly/respectfully, btw) figured out that this is repairable and not that disastrous of a hack. I'm not an IT whiz-kid (hell, as I like to put it [albeit a bit exaggeratedly], I just barely know the difference between ROM and RAM, just like I just barely know the difference between a co-valent bond and James Bond [WINK]...), but, yeah, this does NOT look or "feel" like the handiwork of a "Jihadist". Nonetheless, I certainly hope that it can be restored to the way it was...and ***THANK YOU*** to both JohnFen & Fuzz for the suggestions as to restoration.
And a note to any muslims: Why not try a fusion of secular (trans)humanism and *Sufism*...you'll be glad you did...

Posted by: MCP2012 at March 10, 2006 10:57 AMWell eddie backoo doesn't sound like a very islamic name, but if they are islamic hackers they probably feel that your promotion of science and transhumanism are a threat to their religion.
Posted by: james8170 at March 10, 2006 11:30 AMits probably the americans again . who knows what they are up to these days ...
Posted by: jiva at March 10, 2006 02:10 PMwe should probably demand the invasion of some piddly muslim state. preferably one with oil we could use to power the servers.
Posted by: lvx23 at March 10, 2006 04:06 PMThe damn things is, I actually like the music.
Posted by: Jason at March 10, 2006 09:54 PMA netsearch on the cobra-dude listed in the hack brings up a page which mentions a ton of website defacements by that name, so I guess its nothing personal..
Posted by: nomad at March 11, 2006 09:13 AMYou open your heart and look what happens!!!! :)
Is this not a good illustration of why it is hard (is it impossible?) to live up to the ideal of 'loving' the whole human race in all their manifestations. (Such a big ask God/dess. I suppose I'll keep trying though.)
MCP2012 said 'Why not try a fusion of secular (trans)humanism and *Sufism*...you'll be glad you did..Death to all fanatics.' Hahaha. That's funny.
Who do you/we find it easier/harder to love/hate.? Islamic Hackers or 'murican script kiddies. Who is more threatening? Why?
Hey, didn't some of you start off 'playing the hack'??? Maybe it is just geek karma. (Littleshits!!)
Posted by: THisIsreaLLYhapPEniNG at March 11, 2006 03:23 PMYeah, my intuitive 2 cents: This strikes me as some teenage boy-geeks with *way* too much geeky-testosterone flowing...But, of course, they provide the testing-of-the(chinks in)-armor: Now Paul, if you can, dear wonderful colleague & host, do what JohnFen and Fuzz suggested, and also update whatever security protocols you have (had) in place, and thus the little geeks will have served a good purpose, *viz.*, strengthing FutureHi's defense/immune system...
And, once again, my THANKS & ADMIRATION for all the guys & gals here who know more (in most cases, probably A LOT more) about this sort of stuff than I do...
Love to all...
DEATH TO ALL FANATICS...!!

Posted by: MCP2012 at March 11, 2006 04:05 PMIt takes a couple of minutes for the mind (mine) to work through all the various reasons why a hacker should do this to Future Hi in the name of Islam. I find it difficult to see 'murican geek-teens' not only working though those same mental permutations (too much 'intelligence' involved for so little displayed), but to actually have any point. If it was mindless vandalism, surely it would be much more amusing for them to attack say some far right Christian website or whatever.
You never know though, those are just my thoughts.
On the other hand, it did make me wonder if this is perhaps our first sign of a worrying new 'trend'. Lets be honest and admit there is a (large?) number of people willing to devote their lives and deaths to bringing Western Society to its knees, and perhaps the best means of going about this, they are slowly learning, would be via the internet.
Either way, this is the handiwork of true idiots.
Posted by: eventhorizen at March 11, 2006 09:03 PMyes, this seems to be done by kids who think that they are all mighty and powerful by making an image over a forum, they know how to do this, but instead of maybe making good use of there talents they are instead taken in by immaturity. Hopefully someone or something will show them that there talents (or lack there of) could be used for the better, but futurehi will overcome and still spread good loving thoughts. futurehi will prevail

Posted by: zenmaster at March 12, 2006 02:56 AMwhat can we do except continue to believe that working from our hearts will eventually cause a paradigm shift?
om gam
Stop looking inwards and start looking outwards?
Who is going to define the future? Those who isolate themselves from the majority, clinging to hopes and dreams and righteous values? Or the single individual that witnesses the coming together of the tides of history, and see's where he can make a mark?
What was so different between the message of generations of families of Jews, and Christ?
You dont cause a paradigm shift by preaching, because the majority dont want to listen to your bleeding heart optimism and messages of brotherly love. You cause a paradigm shift when you play such an integral and monumental role in a history defining event that the world looks up from its frivolities and is awe struck by the events you were involved in.
Very few preachers ever caused, or played a part within a paradigm shift. Those that did either risked or lost their lives.
You want to cause a paradigm shift? Become Jesus.
Posted by: eventhorizen at March 13, 2006 07:37 AMWhen will the hacksignature be removed from the forum?

This is one of the most insightful comments I have ever read. I second this thought wholeheartedly, and would add that the time has come when we, collectively, can preach a major paradigm change and not risk or lose our lives. Indeed, we can empower the ideological center against the ministrations of extremeists be they religious, rationalistic, eco-pagan, and/or mystical escapist, and the people will look up grateful and awestruck at what we have done.
[ I'll be saying a whole lot more on this subject in a couple of days. ]

Hi Paul,
I have just posted some info to psidoc@gmail.com. It's a link to a page discussing the problem and possible solutions.
I hope it's of some use.
Posted by: Sunface at March 13, 2006 12:02 PMhow does one say "pWn3d!!!!!!!!!" in turkish? the hacker subculture strikes me as a bit strange. they just seem like ways of using maximum effort for minimum results and it feels hard to find a motive. taking over fox.com and running in riotporn. still, most big, successful attempts that have come to my attention involve little more than variants on the above mentioned word from the Sacred Language.
still, people above point out the disinformation screen which has obscured hard facts on the matter of h4x0r. the techknowledgery has been made available, but to what use has it been put? and to whose benefit? certainly, the cats who h4x0r3d the agency's website a few years back did more good for them in the short and long term, neverminding the detriments they did to themselves.
as for an explanation one can only speculate as to the true identity of the 1337 involved, or the sinister web of intrigue which no doubt underlies islam.com. it pays to remember that when the Weird get going, the going gets weird.

Hi
Im a lurker, but a big reader of your site.
I concour with the person above me. Can you not just remove the malicious layer coding from the rest of the html? That should solve all your problems.
If anything, right click to view source on the forum home page, copy the whole thing into a wordpad, remove the bad coding, save it, and reload it. I dont know if this will work or not, but I really dont see why it shouldnt.
Also I noticed you use phpBB for your forums. phpBB is one of the most flawed and vulnerable forum structures out there (hence why they are constantly updating and patching it), you may want to consider changing to a different forum software sometime in the future.
If you didnt know, you may want to read this as well:
http://www.issociate.de/board/post/312809/phpBB_mass-hack_being_prepared_
as well as the related digg article with some more useful info in the comments:
http://digg.com/security/phpBB_mass_hack_being_prepared_
At our site we use SMF (simplemachines) and we will never go back to phpBB with the ease and security we've found with it. But with your current dilema, you can also just contact someone at phpBB and ask for advice on how to get rid of your "hack" if our advice fails.
Namaste,

Zachariah,
I tried removing the html code you suggested to test on my computer (with just the text, im not an editor of the site) and it almost works - it now only says "hacked" on top. The word is also still in a different part of the code, in a table row. I don't know if the hacker added the row and it can be removed or not. The introductions forum is also titled "hacked".
Posted by: Brad at March 21, 2006 05:05 PMWrath of Islam? I do believe the wrath of some hackers that are _possibly_ MUSLIMS. That's a huge difference.
Posted by: Kabir at March 28, 2006 01:49 PMIf my site was hacked by an American, is it correct to say that I was attacked by America? No.
Posted by: Kabir at March 28, 2006 02:01 PMHi, I am a Muslim and visitor of your beautiful web site... and I do not believe Islamists (Islam means Peace after all my dear Friends, please do realize it!) are threatened by science, in fact we encourage knowledge and we believe our Creator encompasses this...
It is easy nowadays to "blame the Muslims"... please see beyond, those who can see...
Love and Peace and Blessings from our Creator the Almighty...
