By way of Mark Pesce:
Apparently, a chemical in cannabis causes cell growth in the brain...

news_rss20:
A synthetic chemical similar to the active ingredient in marijuana makes new cells grow in rat brains. What is more, in rats this cell growth appears to be linked with reducing anxiety and depression. The results suggest that marijuana, or its derivatives, could actually be good for the brain.
In mammals, new nerve cells are constantly being produced in a part of the brain called the hippocampus, which is associated with learning, memory, anxiety and depression. Other recreational drugs, such as alcohol, nicotine and cocaine, have been shown to suppress this new growth. Xia Zhang of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, and colleagues decided to see what effects a synthetic cannabinoid called HU210 had on rats' brains.
They found that giving rats high doses of HU210 twice a day for 10 days increased the rate of nerve cell formation, or neurogenesis, in the hippocampus by about 40%.

That particular compound must be missing from the stuff I was smoking last night...anxiety and depression abound!
And, I would gather the rats were having one heck of a good time.... =p
Posted by: GrnLntrn at October 14, 2005 10:25 AMmy experience is different and that's why I have stopped smoking marihuana:during that period I couldn't remember anything and I was more and more anxsious...
Posted by: guest at October 15, 2005 07:35 AMYou have a different experience each time you use Cannabis because each strain or variety has different kinds of Cannabinoids present and at different levels. Many strains will produce lots of anxiety in me, and some strains will smother all anxiety I'm having at the moment. Since there are so many different cannabinoids in Cannabis, and they affect the brain in thousands of different ways, it is impossible to say that Cannabis does this, or that Cannabis does that. In fact, Cannabis has many effects depending on the concentrations of the different active ingredients, and the prohibition of this plant supresses research into many of these effects... some I'm sure are very useful, some not.
Posted by: truth technician at October 15, 2005 05:24 PMOne thing I've never been certain of -- is there enough of a correlation between effects on rats' physiology and possible effects on human physiology? Is it at all possible for our two species to respond in vastly different ways?
Posted by: Upwinger at October 15, 2005 10:34 PMDrugs do not produce anxiety. Some drugs can put one into a state of mind that is highly self-referential which can be very difficult for certain people. Cannabis can expose and enhance existing psychological issues but it doesn't bring anything out that wasn't already there.
...is there enough of a correlation between effects on rats' physiology and possible effects on human physiology?
Well I should hope so given that much of western medicine is based on the little buggers.
Posted by: lvx23 at October 15, 2005 10:42 PMWithout the War-on-**SOME**-Drugs, entrepreneurs could easily develop low-cost THC which would incorporate this (HU210--and other) beneficial cannabinoids into a consumable that wouldn't even especially need to be smoked. But, echoing the late great John Belushi, NOOOO! Instead the Drug Fascists insist upon the current course. This sort of reasearch & findings, however, should certainly contribute to a systematic change of course eventually...

Posted by: MCP2012 at October 16, 2005 08:07 AMdon't forget to read the rest of the article.. marijuana may not be good for the brain, but similar cannabinoids could be:
"In another study, Barry Jacobs, a neuroscientist at Princeton University, gave mice the natural cannabinoid found in marijuana, THC (D9-tetrahydrocannabinol)). But he says he detected no neurogenesis, no matter what dose he gave or the length of time he gave it for. He will present his results at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington DC in November.
Jacobs says it could be that HU210 and THC do not have the same effect on cell growth. It could also be the case that cannabinoids behave differently in different rodent species - which leaves open the question of how they behave in humans.
Zhang says more research is needed before it is clear whether cannabinoids could some day be used to treat depression in humans."
Posted by: observer at October 17, 2005 08:30 AMRoger that, and point(s) well-articulated & (very) well-taken. But proper pharmacological engineering could, however, probably "tweak" the various (combinations of) cannabnoids so as to facilitate both an exquisite 5th circuit high as well as induce brain-cell growth (from glial cells, btw? the article doesn't say, but it would seem to stimulate glial cells to transform into neurons, which is pretty cool...)
The point is, though, that, w/o the proper socio-economic institutional incentive-structure (the diametric **opposite** of the current War-on-*SOME*-Drugs), no would-be entrepreneur will set about to do this. There is, i.e., a strong *DIS*incentive structure to even *think* of doing this at present. Yet again, I echo, Voltaire announced the Age of *Enlightenment* over 2 centuries too early!! (*Wink*)
Posted by: MCP2012 at October 17, 2005 12:36 PMthis has always been known to have beneficial medicinal properties....the only reason this drug was illegalized in the 1930's was due to the fact that the public had access to it and could not make a profit off of the drug. whish is the same reason why they do not sell it today. Yet they are willing to shove all these man made drugs down our throats promising a cure...when in all actuality these manmade drugs are harmful to our bodies. They need to bring this drug back into the medicinal field.

Posted by: Dai at October 18, 2005 10:26 AMCannabis is not a drug, as it was given to us from god. it expands a human's mind, and the best people to use this god scent gift are those who control our country and it may expand their minds. one key point is evident, when smoking marijuana ideas flow and evolve, however they are soon forgotten, therefore it is necessary to have a pen and paper when smoking and thinking.
Its about time man realizes that this is the healing of the nation and nothing else shall ever compare.
Any part of the world has marijuana available, and any part of Trinidad and Tobago. This would show the high consumption rate, coming from its fellow countrymen and countrywomen.
ITS ABOUT TIME WE EMBRACED MARIJUANA AND BECAME ONE IN THIS WORLD
