Below is Robert Anton Wilson's description of Timothy Leary's 8-circuit model of consciousness. One of the most common criticisims leveled at this model is that evolution if left to itself does not necessarily lead to greater intelligence... so talking about future circuits as if they are inevitable might be a bit overstated. On the other hand if we stick with the only empirical example we have - the earth, the history of life and intelligence on this planet has been an inexorable drive from lesser complexity towards greater complexity and intelligence... from entropy towards extropy. Stuart Kaufmann, a complexity theorist at the Sante Fe Institute, has written some compelling academic papers on auto-catalytic sets which demonstrate that life, given the right initial conditions will inevitably lead to greater and greater complexity over time. This trend is continuing to play itself out now in rapid fashion, as technological progress is accelerating even faster.

Let's try Dr. Leary's perspective on these mysteries.
To understand neurological space, Dr. Leary assumes that the nervous system consists of eight potential circuits, or "gears," or mini-brains. Four of these brains are in the usually active left lobe and are concerned with our terrestrial survival; four are extraterrestrial, reside in the "silent" or inactive right lobe, and are for use in our future evolution. This explains why the right lobe is usually inactive at this stage of our development, and why it becomes active when the person ingests psychedelics.

Posted by: DW at March 5, 2004 06:21 PMI agree. It amazes me how much people attempt to discredit his work, especially his 8-circuit model. But I have yet to find a more scientifically modeled description of higher states of consciousness. What funnier, is those who do discredit this model have never experienced much if any higher states themselves, so it makes sense.
Posted by: Paul Hughes at March 5, 2004 11:32 PMThis is the first time i have ever read anything even close to what i think is the best excuse of how we are. I reached this site myself by unlocking the true potential of my own self through self-actualization. Although i do not fuully comprehend all this information i strongly urge any of those out thier reading this to direct me further. My consciousness is only limited by what i dont know and already i can tell that i am understanding more
Posted by: satan at May 19, 2004 09:54 PMFirst off - to the person posting as "satan" please enroll in college ASAP, also may I suggest a few classes? I would advise enrolling in: Logic, Ethics (Satan might enjoy this one), Philosophy, Personality theory, Abnormal psychology, and Experimental analysis of behavior? I honestly believe you would enjoy these classes immensely.
I must caution anyone who thinks they can transcend simply by taking drugs. Take it slow and easy. Research information concerning case studies, controlled experiments, and physiological effects as it pertains to the complexity of the brains chemistry. Furthermore, understand that some people are more at risk for developing problems by experimentation with mind altering drugs
(having a history of mental illness in the family and/ or depressive disorders requiring, especially people taking MIOA’s). Recent tests (which I have paid for personally) have shown that I now have kidney damage, frontal lobe damage; sever memory disorders, reading disorder and eye dominance shifting (indicating further brain derogation). I am 29 going on 30 and have experienced wonderful moments of bliss in my travels/ experiences and I feel that I am too young to be having these physiological problems. Some (like my HairaKrishna friends) might say my “problems” are gifts of enlightenment. I suggest reading the case study by Oliver Sacks entitled “the last hippie”.
Some of the experiences I’ve had might not have been possible without the exposure to drugs and/ or alternative beliefs, and for this I am grateful. I have also experienced naturally occurring phenomena that suggests there is a middle path left forgotten simply because it’s hard work. Yogi, marital arts, meditation, reading, and education all take such a long time to master. It’s a balance of these that aids the consciousness evolution. Drugs are sometimes needed to create temporary alternatives and experiences.
Although drug are not always the way, or needed for evolution/ self actualization
(Read Maslow). I have seen the dance of Shiva sober, but never with aids. I have been caught listening to the birds communicate and then felt their attention, energy and communication directed towards me, this was extremely strange even though I have seen and heard how they react when a predator is in the area. If you close your eyes and simply listen you can visualize where a predator is located and details such as how threat level and a path of travel. If I were to explain this to someone they might consider my experience a hallucination (seeing something that I couldn’t possible see normally). Experiential learning and alchemy should still be investigated as noble pursuits. I feel alchemy still holds many gifts to yield to thoughts who quest for knowledge. May I suggest reading “The re-enchantment of the world”? What I really wanted to say is simple to be cautious, use common (or as I refer to it uncommon) sense, read published information from credible sources, know your own body and your psyche, and remember that you only get one body to use or abuse. The choice is yours to choose.
One thing is for sure, we are all parts of the whole. We truly need to change our view of drugs to understanding so that we can stop focusing internally and start looking at community and cultural practices as if every person matters, to harmonize human rights with global, social and economic needs. Daily life as if the spirit matters, to harmonize our individuality with our sense of oneness with all that is. This in turn will (I think) effect economics and harmonize the global economy with the needs of the environment.
A paradigm shift in the way we relate to drugs, our Earth, other species and to our fellow human beings is crucial to the future of life on this planet; We human beings were created to be stewards of Earth, nurturing and sustaining its varied wonders, resources and life forms so that all may thrive. Earth itself and all forms of life are meant to endure, nourish and be nourished, and live together interdependently in peace, harmony and kinship.
Let’s evolve!!!
It seems that the 8-fold of consciousness is a more advanced interpretation of the 8-fold way of buddhism. I read a book about the merry pranksters'. When they arrived in ny, the pranksters' visited leary who had used lsd to explore higher pathways using the tibetan book of the dead as guide.
The organization of the buddhist version of the 8-fold way is:
1)right action, right liveliness (gravity influenced)
2)right speech, right effort (sound influenced)
3)right thought, right mindliness (electric influenced)
4)right sight, right contemplation (light influenced)
Or in a more generalized form,
1)intrinsic coordination (containment/expansive processes=0)
2)extrinsic coordination (containment/expansive=1)
3)containment>expansive
4)expansive>containment
